FAQs

What happens to my game if Driftgrain shuts down?

Nothing. Core play never went through our servers, so there’s nothing for us to switch off. If the company is dissolved or a title goes two years without sales or support, the public domain release happens immediately instead of waiting for its scheduled date. That acceleration is written into our operating agreement and can’t be amended away.

What does “public domain on a fixed date” actually mean?

On first commercial release of a title, we publish a Release Manifest. This manifest will include the dedication date (the date the public domain release will happen), an itemized list of everything being released to public domain, and an itemized list of the handful of things that aren’t. Things that won’t be released includes secrets, trademarks, and material somebody else owns. On that dedication release date, the first-party source and assets that we created become CC0 1.0 with no further action required by anyone. The release will provide all resources needed to rebuild the title on your own - source code, build instructions, links and notes referencing any third party components required.

The date can be moved earlier. It cannot be moved later, except briefly and publicly for a security defect, and never by more than six months total across a title’s entire life.

Is there a subscription?

Only for optional hosted extras, never for the game. If a subscription is available and you cancel your subscription, it only freezes what those extras track. It never revokes anything you already earned and never touches your ability to play. Buying a title once means owning it.

Do I need an account?

Not to play. Direct peer-to-peer and LAN games need no account, no login, and no check-in with us. Titles may ask for a nickname or player name for display purposes and player identification during play. An account exists only if you want public matchmaking or ranked ladders, which are services provided because they’re genuinely useful. Those services will never be gates on whether the game starts.

Why keep the trademarks if you’re giving away the code?

So that “the official version” still means something after the source is released. After public domain release, anyone can build, fork, sell, or rewrite the code. Nobody can pass their build off as Driftgrain’s. The pledge is about the work, not about giving up the business.

Where can I buy the games?

Nowhere yet. We have a couple games in various stages of development, one nearing beta. Releases will be based on the game and its ideal platform, but we do plan to release our games on as wide a variety of storefronts as possible and on as many platforms as we can build for. When store pages exist they’ll be linked from a catalog section on this site and builds will be DRM-free on every storefront that allows it.
